Air travel is returning to pre-pandemic levels. Many people in our community are taking a break, including some of our doctors. If you find yourself unable to make an appointment with your favourite Turn The Corner doctor for a while, that is likely the reason. If you can’t identify another doctor you’d like to see from here, please contact our reception team on 1300 557 502 and they will be able to help you make an appointment with an appropriate member of our team.
Should you be contemplating an international trip yourself, don’t forget to make sure your travel vaccines are up to date. Many of us haven’t considered anything but COVID and flu vaccines for the last couple of years, but diseases like typhoid, hepatitis and yellow fever haven’t gone away.
Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella typhi bacteria, found in contaminated water. It’s rare in developed countries but can be found elsewhere, and you’d prefer not to have it. The typhoid vaccine offers some protection against typhoid for up to three years. When did you last have yours?
Most cases of yellow fever occur in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. Symptoms of yellow fever include fever, headache, nausea and fatigue. A small proportion of patients who contract the virus develop more severe symptoms and approximately half of those die. The good news is that yellow fever is preventable. The vaccine is safe and almost 100% effective, and even better, one dose will generally be all you’ll ever need.
To discuss what travel vaccines might be appropriate ahead of any trips you’re planning, please make an appointment for a Travel Consult with your favourite Turn The Corner doctor, or contact our reception team on 1300 557 502.
