Whilst many of us are back at work, catching up with friends, and even getting on planes, COVID has not gone away. Australia-wide, 25 to 30 thousand people test positive every day – and that’s just the reported cases. The focus of health communication for a long time understandably concentrated on the benefits of getting vaccinated, but it’s important to be aware that there are now various new treatments available to help patients that have mild to moderate COVID-19, with the goal of reducing the likelihood that they will need treatment in hospital.
First, there is an injectable drug available that can be used within the first 5 days of symptoms starting in patients aged 12 years or older with mild to moderate COVID-19, who are at high risk of progression to severe disease. This drug has been shown to reduce hospitalisation or death in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19.
Second, there is now also an oral treatment available to treat mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults aged 18 years of age or older, who do not require supplemental oxygen, and who are at increased risk of progression to hospitalisation. The advantage of this oral medication is that many people will be able to receive treatment for COVID-19 in their own homes, without the need to travel to hospital for treatment as an inpatient.
If you feel you might benefit from one of these treatments, or simply wish to find out more so that you’re better prepared if you get COVID, please make an appointment with your favourite Turn The Corner doctor.
